‘From farm/fieldwork to fabric,’ the Sabotage X Gentle Artefacts capsule collection is the output of a highly unique collaboration, in which a fashion designer and street photographer accompanied Gentle Artefacts to conduct ethnographic fieldwork with craft-scale tea farmers in Wazuka, Kyoto, Japan.
Inspired by his encounters with the farmers and the insights he gleaned while learning first hand about their everyday practices and environs, Sabotage set about designing a capsule collection, of which this Harvest Jacket is the signature piece of ‘Farmcore” workwear with a Western street aesthetic and contrastive traditional Japanese silhouette. Of the the stylistic choice of wide courduroy accenting on the lapels, Sabotage writes in his fieldnotes: “The patterns stuck with me. Neatly planted rows of matcha bushes from a drone’s view reminded me of corduroy. That observation became a thread — literally. I reinterpreted that texture into 2.5 wale corduroy lapels for a workwear-blazer hybrid. The jacket shape references the samue, worn by the farmers every day, but it's crossed with a biker silhouette — built for Paris, rooted in Kyoto.”
Sabotage continues, describing the accompanying Punk Picking Pants that complete the ensemble: “The pants follow the same logic — inspired by punk bondage pants but adapted from a farmer’s practices and for a farmer’s practical needs. Tighter silhouettes help avoid snags on the branches while working. The zips adjust width. The design is functional, but the attitude is loud.”
And on the imaginative, localizing imagery of Obubu Tea Farms, shot by Takeshi Hayakawa and sewn as full lining into the interior of the garment, Sabotage writes: “Inside the jacket, Takeshi Hayakawa’s drone shot of the high mountain tea fields — the photograph that started this whole thing — is printed as the lining. That image transforms the piece into more than outerwear. The garment becomes memory. Place-making. Environment. Reflection.”
